Largest Dialysis Providers Ranked

Fresenius Medical Care (No. 1) and DaVita (No. 2) ranked as the top dialysis providers in the USA. Fresenius saw 192,964 patients this year, while DaVita saw 190,500. Coming in third was U.S. Renal Care, seeing 25,120 patients. Fresenius’ bump in volume came from an increase in patients accepted for treatment for acute kidney injury.

DaVita reported income for Q1 of 2017 was 21 percent less than the same time last year. The drop in income was attributed to lower ACA enrollment among dialysis patients, an increase in wages for clinical staff and adjusted operating income for pharmacy operations.

Ashfaq Named Senior VP of OPKO Health Renal Division

Dr. Akhtar Ashfaq has been named senior vice president of clinical research and development of OPKO Health’s renal division. He will support the adoption of Rayaldee extended-release capsules by healthcare professionals caring for patients with stage 3 or 4 kidney disease.

He’ll also lead the development of the drug to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in adults on hemodialysis with vitamin D insufficiency as well as the development of Alpharen for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in adults with stage 5 kidney disease.

Fresenius, Cigna Partner for Collaborative Care

The national program aims to lower the cost of care for patients with end stage renal disease undergoing dialysis while also improving quality. The program will be part of Cigna’s Collaborative Care, a value-based model that uses incentives to engage healthcare providers.

Fresenius Medical Care North America will still be paid for the dialysis services it provides to Cigna patients and Fresenius Health Partners will assume separate responsibility to manage medical costs and improve patient outcomes.
