All the King's Horses

By Daniel Foster23 Jun 2025

I have a bottle of vitamins sitting on my counter, and it seems normal enough. The pills contain various percentages of the USDA recommended daily allowance. Most are within the range you would expect. Except for B12.

Each pill contains 20,833% of your daily needs.

That’s more than six months worth of B12… in one pill.

Oscar Wilde said “nothing succeeds like excess.” But I don’t think he had a dietetics degree.

Why did the manufacturers include so much? We could chalk it up to compensation for depleted foods or an overzealous biochemist, but in American reality, we sometimes use vitamin overload to try to fix things after their already broken.

So maybe a more appropriate quote would be from Franklin “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” or at least worth 20,833% of a cure.

Isn’t that often the way in modern medicine? We wait until Humptey Dumptey falls off the wall, then try to reassemble him, rather than coaxing him gently down off the wall in the first place, or at least spreading out a pad.

Our sales team runs into this constantly. Our technology, when used during surgery, has revealed the need for graft revision time and again. It’s so simple to fix while the patient is still on the table. But a week later, when a bad anastomosis is leaking, it’s difficult, complex, expensive, and dangerous to the patient.

Since we’re talking about fairy tales, I suppose we should find some moral to the story. How about this: Transonic flow probes, when used during surgery, can save the time, money, and help the surgeon save a life.

Then you don’t have to call in all the King’s horses and all the King’s men, who—as we already know—couldn’t put Humptey together again.
