Flowprobes and the Chicken Cannon

By Daniel Foster01 Apr 2025

Like medical device innovation, aeronautics is a precise science. The aviation industry’s pursuits are lore and legend, from DaVinci’s sketch books, to the Wright brother’s 12 seconds at Kitty Hawk, to the SR-71A Blackbird, whose pilots could watch a sunrise in reverse while the plane outran the rotation of the planet.

But few aviation tales are more memorable than that of the chicken cannon (or chicken gun, as it is usually called). Bird strikes are a priority consideration during airplane design. Colliding with a bird may not sound catastrophic, but at 500mph, it’s more like hitting a rock. So the chicken cannon is exactly what it sounds like. A large gun that launches dead chickens.

Armed with this implement of absurdity, engineers build a plane, strap it down, and then open fire like it’s D-Day for KFC. After the plane has been shot with chickens from every conceivable angle without failure, it is deemed safe to carry passengers through our bird-infested skies.

The medical device industry is equally storied. How you may ask? Do we dent our devices with ducks? Are we patrolled by parrots? Inspected by ibis?

No! Just like the aviation engineers who will stop at nothing (including the 8-piece bucket bazooka) to ensure passenger safety, so we say there is no hurdle to high, no bar too… uh, barring… for patient safety.

Simply, we spare no expense to build the best quality devices that cutting edge technology allows. That’s why we build everything right here in Ithaca, NY. The best way to ensure consistent, world-beating quality, is to keep production in-house.

And lest you think this is all pomp and circumstance, consider that over all the models we’ve built, the countless individual probes and meters spanning a dizzying array of clinical applications…

…Our warranty return rate stands at 0.5%

And that’s not an April Fool’s joke.
