How to Live a Long and Happy Life as a Clinician
A physician in Cleveland recently passed away… at 103 years old.
Dr. Howard Tucker was a practicing neurologist at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center until the age of 100, earning him a place in the Guiness Book of World Records as the oldest practicing doctor on earth. Much of medicine is about creating or maintaining longevity, and Dr. Tucker obviously knew something about that. So what was his secret to long life?
“Be kind. Be happy… and no smoking…”1
We understand all three. We always strive to treat our clients kindly, and we have a friendly listening ear for the situations that always arise in a complex world. And unfortunately, smoking creates a lot of the need for our cardiac surgical devices.
But longevity itself is a more complex question, as Dr. Tucker well knew. Sugar isn’t great for your health, and Dr. Tucker had a sweet tooth, yet he lived longer than most of us. Genetics plays a role. As does involvement in life. Dr. Tucker joined the Navy during WWII and moved up until he was Chief of Neurology for the North Atlantic Fleet during the Korean war. He was a skier, a ballroom dancing instructor, an accomplished violinist, and the oldest person to pass Ohio’s bar exam (at age 67).2
So maybe variety really is the spice of life. We think so anyway: cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, hemodialysis, transplant: variety defines our catalog.
We’ve been in business for almost 43 years now. That pales in comparison to 103, but we’ll get there eventually. We know we will because we know that our clients will always need us, so we’ll always be there for them, just like (so we are told) Dr. Tucker was there for his patients.
We wish you a long and healthy life.
So be kind. Be happy.
And please don’t smoke.
