Do you have peacock equipment?

Come now… you know who you are.

It’s the equipment that sits in your OR with its tail fanned out, being beautiful, being in the way, being obnoxious and only partially useful.

But, but… extra features!

Well, a shirt with five neck holes has extra features.

Speaking of shirts, two hundred years ago, a British man named Beau Brummell stood on a street corner and observed men’s fashion for the elite. It consisted of corsets, gemstones, high-heeled shoes, lace ruffles, and the most brightly colored silks imaginable. He aspired to be high society, but that was a nicer way of saying he had champagne tastes on a beer budget. So he started a new trend that he could afford. A one-man style revolution.

Instead of wigs and powders, Brummell focused on grooming. Eschewing flowing silks, he wore neatly tailored suits. As opposed to bright primary colors, he chose subtle greys, blues, greens, and browns. The British regent (soon to be King George IV) became one of his followers, converting the British aristocracy; and the French Revolution literally killed off the men who dressed in diamond-studded corsets, so in a few short years, Brummell had single-handedly revolutionized men’s fashion into the basic cuts and colors that still endure today.

But we have not yet learned that lesson in the OR. Of course, I’m not talking about simple scrubs or monotone surgical gowns, but peacock equipment.

We pay for features. Features we don’t need. Features we don’t use. We buy it because it’s new (even if it’s just the old repackaged.)

But we have a bigger impetus to change that style than Brummell ever did. Because hospitals have budgets. Every time we spend a dime on something we don’t need, that’s a dime the hospital doesn’t have for something that someone else does need. Afterall, it’s not about each of us in our own departments, it’s about providing the best care for the patients who are in every department.
