The Contagion of Misinformation

By Daniel Foster09 Nov 2023

Vaccines have been hotly debated in recent years. There has been ire, suspicion, and even accusation, ranging from the mild to the wild.

Regardless, the American Heart Association has offered to dispel some of the most basic myths in the best way possible: a simple recitation of scientific facts.

Viral infection, be it pneumonia, the flu, COVID, or a host of others, can cause inflammation. Heart disease is a build-up of plaque in the arteries, and inflammation can cause these plaques to rupture. The mobile plaque fragments can then block arteries, causing heart attacks or strokes. This risk is significant, considering that heart attacks and heart failure occur in 1 out of 5 people hospitalized for RSV. Furthermore, in a 2021 study published in Lancet, COVID was associated with a three-fold to eight-fold risk of suffering a heart attack.

It should not come as a surprise then, that vaccines which help prevent infection can have the opposite effect. A 2021 article published in the Journal of the American Heart Association revealed that flu vaccination is associated with a 18% reduction in chance of death from cardiac issues, and an even greater reduction in chance of death overall.

It is true that the COVID-19 vaccine can cause blood clotting problems in a few instances. However, COVID-19 itself causes blood clotting issues in many patients. So even in the case of a known side effect, the lack of vaccination poses the same threat to a greater degree.
