Two of your peers in perfusion (Roger DeLong, CP; and Joe Basha, CP) had a conversation about a fast, accurate, easy way to assess clot burden. Too good to be true? You can judge for yourself, because Transonic’s Transit Time Flowsensors can be used for totalization of volume in dilution measurements.
Yes, that’s indicator dilution, but in case you have nightmares about a certain type of catheter that doesn’t read accurately, Roger assures you—and he is correct—that Transit Time technology doesn’t work the same way. “[Those catheters] can kinda give dilution a bad name. They can be 20, 30, 40% inaccurate, and physicians know this, but it’s what they’ve used, it’s what they know, it’s what they have… [But Transonic’s Transit Time measurement] mixes very quickly, and saline is a largely different wavelength than blood, so it reads it pretty accurately.”
Putting a finer point on it, Roger stated flatly that we’re too conservative with our percentage error: “The advertised accuracy is within 10%, but it’ll read a lot tighter than that.”
Trending dilution measurements allows you to change the oxygenator when you need to—not before, and definitely not after. That improves everything: your day, the hospital’s bottom line…
