Valentine's Day Medicine

By Daniel Foster14 Feb 2025

Stories of the life of St Valentine abound, each with varying degrees of embellishment and/or invention. Historically, he was a third century clergyman, commemorated in Western Christianity for his ministry during the Roman persecution. He also has a holiday named after him that we celebrate with candy, champagne, romantic dinners, and well... your imagination can take it from there.

So yes, these embellished stories of him often revolve around courtly love, but not always. For example, when imprisoned in Rome, it is said that he miraculously restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer.

Having worked in transplantation, this author can tell you that restoring sight is often appreciably more difficult. Extraction of donor tissue, preservation, processing, then surgical reimplantation is precise, delicate, time-sensitive work.

But then, isn’t romance all those things as well? What relationship has ever flourished without precise attention, a delicate touch, and dedicated time? So maybe it’s not an unfitting story for St Valentine afterall.

Compassion is supposed to be the wellspring of healing, so in a way, love (though not necessarily the romantic kind) is the foundation of medicine. We work to heal others because we have compassion for their suffering, because we care about their wellbeing.

So this blog is simply a Valentine’s Day card from Transonic to every clinician and healthcare worker who has ever heard of us, used our products, or simply stumbled upon this blog by happy accident.

We know that you take care because you care, and on this day, we want to commemorate your kindness.

Thank you for all that you do, and Happy Valentines Day.
