The Power of Intent

By Daniel Foster02 Oct 2024

The smallest action can save a life, even an unconscious act.

A man is late for work, but he pauses on the porch for a moment of indecision, key still in the lock. With an irritated huff, he hustles back into the house and turns off the hall light he left on. Those few seconds allow the neighbor’s child, chasing a ball, to make it to the other side of the street before the man roars past, driving too quickly for a residential neighborhood.

Neither of them realizes that a hall light saved the child’s life.

But sometimes, saving a life is directly intentional. An act not only of kindness, but of pure will. Dr. Fady Charbel has saved many lives. Grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. They were people fated to die, but they lived because of the experienced hands of a physician who can repair problems inside a living brain more deftly than most of us can screw the lid back on a jar of peanut butter.

He’s dedicated his life to this. Dr. Charbel even worked with us to design probes that fit his needs more perfectly. He’s touring now, again. If you are a cerebrovascular surgeon, you really should go listen to him speak. I’ve heard him. It’s worth your time.

The first example was a hall light. The second was a human being. Hardly parallel, aren’t they…?

…Unless lights come in many forms. The angel of mercy is oft depicted as a being of light. Does that comparison make you roll your eyes?

Then let me ask you this…

Would you consider that analogy too grand if Dr. Charbel had saved the person you love most?

Because he’s done that again and again.
