In Patients with Type 2 Diabetes, BMI can be a Predictor of Developing ESRD

After a five year follow up, researchers found 5.8 percent of patients classified as obesity grade two and 7.8 percent of patients classified as obesity grade three had developed a “major renal event” compared to 4.2 percent of patients classified as normal weight. They also found: “Every additional unit of BMI over 25 kg/m2 increased the risk of major renal events by 4 (1-6)%.”

User Base of Amgen’s Parsabiv Expected to Increase over the Next Six Months

Parasbiv, an IV agent to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in hemodialysis patients, is gaining familiarity amongst nephrologists, according to a survey. The survey also found that more than 80 percent of respondents said they expected to use the drug within the next six months.

Dialysis Withdrawal Sees an Increase in Worsening Medical Conditions

Patients who electively withdraw from dialysis experience worsening medical conditions in the months leading up to discontinuation, according to a study. Researchers found that at about a month prior to dialysis withdrawal, the rates of major medical events and hospitalizations dramatically increased.

Researchers found the odds of having chronic kidney disease was 60 percent higher if the patient also had periodontal disease.

Living Kidney Donors May Face Risk Over Time

Living kidney donors were at increased risk for end stage renal disease and pre-eclampsia (in patients who become pregnant), researchers found. However, the researchers note, the risk for these outcomes remains small.
