Trump Administration Announces Plan to Change Kidney Care in the U.S.

President Trump signed an executive order to launch Advancing American Kidney Health, which is designed to increase earlier intervention, incentivize dialysis providers to direct more patients to home hemodialysis and increase the number of kidneys available for transplant.

Specifically, the initiative aims to:

• Reduce the number of people who develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD) by 25 percent by 2030
• Have 80 percent of ESRD patients either receive hemodialysis at home or a transplant by 2025
• Double the number of kidneys available for transplant by 2030

The order also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to:

• Increase the knowledge of chronic kidney disease through a public awareness campaign
• Reform the organ procurement and management system to increase the number of transplantable kidneys
• Extend support for living donors through compensation
• Encourage the development of wearable artificial kidneys

BioIntelliSense is developing a remote, continuous health monitoring data platform. The technology provides clinical insights, predictive analytics and real-time data via medical-grade sensors. Fresenius hopes its investment will help monitoring, treatment and outcomes for kidney disease patients. It will also assist BioIntelliSense with the development of clinical pathways to help patients avoid hospitalization by alerting clinicians to the need for early intervention.

Premature Birth May Significantly Increase Risk for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Later in Life

A recent study found that those who were born preterm should have long-term follow up to preserve their renal function over their lifetime. Birth before 37 weeks gestation interrupts the development and maturation of the kidneys. The strongest association between CKD and premature birth was found in those ages 0 to 9 years.

Study Finds Persistent Gaps in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Care

Patients with CKD in the U.S. experience “persistent and substantial” gaps in their care, according to a new study. The study found that uncontrolled hypertension and uncontrolled diabetes has not changed in CKD patients from 2006 to 2008 and 2012 to 2014.

Real-World Dialysis Patients Have Worse Prognoses

Dialysis patients in the real world have worse prognoses than those in clinical trials, studies have found. Researchers found that randomized controlled trial (RTC) patients were likely to be younger, and had fewer cases of diabetes, diabetic neuropathy and heart failure.
