This is why Zoll Medical has developed the TherOx SS02 (Super Saturated Oxygen Therapy). Following a heart attack, doctors will often use stenting to reopen coronary flow. However, a large portion of the heart’s blood supply is delivered by microvasculature which often remains blocked due to inflammation. This creates a maddening (and deadly) clinical triangle. Lack of blood flow (02 delivery) caused the MI, which in turn causes inflammation, which further restricts blood flow.
Zoll’s solution is supersaturated oxygen diffusion, given in an hour-long infusion. Fundamentally, TherOx consists of a management console, an intermix cartridge, and a catheter. The entire system requires nothing more from the hospital than a standard oxygen tank and normal saline. From these, the cartridge supersaturates the saline with oxygen and delivers it to the catheter, which in turn infuses it into the patient’s blood in the left main coronary artery. This site-specific delivery passively diffuses oxygen into the microvasculature, helping to relieve inflammation, deliver oxygen to the starved heart tissue, and ultimately helping to restore microvascular flow.
